Middleton could be at the epicentre of a house building boom.

Research by the Middleton Guardian has revealed that plans to build up to 1,000 new homes across the town are currently in the pipeline.

Proposals on the table include:

  • A controversial bid to construct 357 houses on Middleton’s ‘green lung’ around Langley Lane and Hollin Lane.
  • Ambitious plans to erect 303 homes on land behind the back of British Vita between Oldham Road and Glenwood Drive in Boarshaw.
  • The re-emergence of a long term project to build 202 dwellings around Latrigg Crescent together with the creation a new 108 property estate around Windermere Road on Langley.
  • The construction of 53 micro apartments within an existing town centre office block known as London House on Oldham Road.

When combined with a number of smaller developments at sites across the town, the number of proposed new homes built in Middleton could top over 1,000 over the coming years if planners grant the schemes the go-ahead.

The numbers also don’t include those already under construction, including 87 houses at the former Car Supermarket plot in Rhodes and 257 properties at the old Booth Hall Children’s Hospital site in Blackley.

The largest planned development would see 357 houses constructed on green fields around Langley Lane and Hollin Lane.

The majority of sales in Middleton during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £135,167. Terraced properties sold for an average of £87,444, with detached properties fetching £192,326.

Middleton, with an overall average price of £118,717 was more expensive than nearby Blackley (£106,654), but was cheaper than Alkrington Garden Village (£163,543) and Chadderton (£125,509).

Overall sold prices in Middleton over the last year were 4% down on the previous year and 5% down on the 2007 level of £124,481.
